chapter seven

Spiritual Protocol

Several years ago, I attended a prayer meeting in the Los Angeles area called "Love L.A." The meeting was jointly led by Jack Hayford, pastor of The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, California, and Lloyd Ogilvie, chaplain of the United States Senate and former pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood. Excitement and joy filled the air as evangelical pastors and leaders came together along with Charismatics and Pentecostals to intercede for Los Angeles. The unity was beautiful to behold and we could sense the blessing of God in the midst of His people.

As we sat in the beautiful jewellike First Presbyterian Church, there was freedom, yet an order to the time of prayer. Microphones had been set up at various stations along the aisles for those who sensed God was leading them to pray about certain issues. The sweetness of the power of the Holy Spirit was tangible as leaders from various parts of the Body of Christ stood and cried out to God together. It was as though a divine fusion of hearts and souls was taking place. We were becoming a body rather than disjointed parts. I marveled at the unity in diversity as the leaders told the names of the churches and organizations they represented.

All of a sudden, just as though a bomb had been thrown in our midst, a man who had wild-looking eyes starting yelling from the back of the church. His voice and body language expressed intense anger, and legalism oozed from his words as he proclaimed something to the effect, Thus saith the Lord, Woe to the shepherds who build fancy homes for themselves and do not take care of My people. They do not feed the poor and the homeless nor see the hurting."

The congregation turned and stared at him, aghast at what was happening. I started to pray for Jack Hayford and Lloyd Ogilvie. One could almost imagine demonic forces whispering into the ears of those who had struggled to come to a meeting with "those weird Pentecostals." I personally felt a deep embarrassment. Questions ran through my brain: Would people who had never heard a prophecy think this was condoned by the Pentecostals? Where did that man come from? How did he get into this closed meeting?

Pastor Hayford spoke up with the graciousness for which he is noted and addressed the shouting man in a gentle voice, "Sir, would you please restrain yourself. According to the Word, the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet. You can control that. You are out of order." He then asked the ushers to escort the man out, who continued to yell as he was taken from our midst. Pastor Ogilvie concurred, and the two gifted men of God set about putting the shards of the gathering back together. Their teamwork was like that of David and Jonathan.

Looking quietly into the eyes of the leaders, Pastor Hayford softly apologized for what had occurred. Rather than skirting the issue, he stated, "I frankly feel embarrassed by what just took place.
